Amazing Benefits of Beach Yoga | Lombok Retreat

Lombok Yoga Retreat | Mawun Beach | Beach Yoga (September 2019)

We all know how good yoga is for you, but what about Yoga by the beach? Imagine practising Yoga on the hidden gem of Kuta, Lombok. Mawun Beach lies nestled in a secluded half-moon bay ringed by verdant hills. Stretch out on the pristine white sands with the view of turquoise waters in the shallows and deep blue further out. With headlands framing the bay, hear the gentle waves hit the sand and bask in the twilight as you flow through your asanas.

Here are some reasons why Beach Yoga is amazing for you!👇

Relaxation & Creativity Boost

Wallace J. Nichols (Marine Biologist at Ocean Conservancy) stated in his “Blue Mind” essay that everyone has a state of “blue mind,.. a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life at the moment”.

The meditative state can be triggered by proximity to water. That’s when the brain goes in a state of soft attention. This makes us open to diverse inputs without getting distracted. The mind is relaxed but sharp, helping our creative process by increasing and directing the flow of thoughts. Doing Yoga near the sea promotes this mindful state and reduces our stress levels, decreasing anxiety, pain, depression and sleep disorders.

Exercising Outdoors Is A Big Deal

Fresh air means the body receives a healthy supply of oxygen. Sea air is even better because it contains tiny droplets of seawater enriched with salt, iodine, magnesium and trace elements, which are scattered into the air by wind and waves. Known as surf-generated aerosols, these stimulate immune reactions by the skin and respiratory organs. A period of inhalation will result in the loosening of the mucus in the respiratory tracts, which makes coughing easier and so helps clear airways.

Sea air helps to build a strong immune system, so beach yoga can further strengthen it thanks to the many asanas and breathing techniques that work on the thymus gland (Kapalbhati and Bow among others). Yoga by the sea also stimulates and improves your metabolism, as well as benefitting the serotonin levels in the brain.

Give Your Posture Muscles A Workout

Exercising on an unstable surface, like a sandy beach, strengthens the secondary muscles of feet, hips, knees and shoulder joints. An unstable surface forces the body to do small adjustments in order to maintain the posture. This means using more muscles that we don’t normally use in our legs, feet, core and arms.

Mood Booster

Did you know that exercising in a natural outdoor environment (especially near water) is great for relieving tension, anger and depression? While boosting your enjoyment, satisfaction and energy at the same time! According to a study published in the Environmental Science and Technology Journal, five or ten minutes of activity outdoors is enough to improve our well-being. The presence of water induces a meditative state of calm focus and gentle awareness, promoting inner peace and ultimately happiness.

Relieve Migraines

Those who suffer from migraine have fewer and less painful migraines after three months of yoga practice. Migraines could be due to a combination of stress and wrong posture. Poor posture causes tension in your upper back, neck and shoulders, which can lead to a headache or migraine. Yoga is generally a great workout to improve your posture (works your core!) and doing it on the sand makes you work that little bit harder on some of the secondary muscles which control the way you stand and sit. Hearing the calming sound of sea waves also helps you relax, releasing that very same tension that could be causing your migraine.

Yoga means ‘union’ and what better place to do it than at Mawun Beach where the land, the sea and the sky meet. The salty smell of the sea, the soft caress of a sunset breeze and the warmth of the sand under your toes are the best invitation to be in the moment.
